CPL fingerprints, county by county
New applicants are fingerprinted within 45 days of applying, for $15. Where depends on your county: Ingham, Shiawassee and Livingston print at the clerk's office, while Eaton, Clinton, Ionia and Barry send you to the sheriff.
County by county
Each county name links to its own CPL page. Hours change, so check there before you go.
| County | Apply at | Fingerprints |
|---|---|---|
| Eaton County | 1045 Independence Boulevard, Charlotte | New applicants apply in person at the clerk's office, then are fingerprinted at the Eaton County Sheriff's Office, not at the clerk's counter. |
| Ingham County | 341 S. Jefferson, Mason or 313 W. Kalamazoo, Lansing (walk-in) | Either office can take fingerprints for new applicants. |
| Clinton County | 100 E. State Street, Suite 2600, St. Johns | New applicants apply in person, then are fingerprinted by appointment at the Clinton County Sheriff's Office. |
| Ionia County | 100 W. Main Street, Ionia (appointment) | Fingerprints for new applicants are taken by appointment at the Ionia County Sheriff's Department. |
| Barry County | 220 W. State St., Hastings | Fingerprints are taken after you file, at the Barry County Sheriff's Office, 1212 W. State Street. |
| Shiawassee County | 208 N. Shiawassee Street, Corunna | Fingerprinting for CPL applications is done at the clerk's office. |
| Livingston County | 200 E. Grand River, Howell | Fingerprinting is done at the clerk's office, 8 AM to 4 PM. |
Don't let the 45 days run out
An application is considered withdrawn if you don't have fingerprints taken within 45 days of filing it. If your county prints at the sheriff by appointment, book it the day you apply.
Bring photo ID. Barry County says the sheriff requires it, and it is worth having anywhere.
Then the next clock starts
Once your prints are taken, the clerk has 45 days to issue your license or a notice of disqualification. That date, not your application date, is the one to watch.
Questions
What happens if I miss the 45-day fingerprint deadline?
State law treats the application as withdrawn. Ask your clerk how to start over, and remember the $100 application fee is not refundable.
Can I get CPL fingerprints done at the same visit as my application?
In Ingham, Shiawassee and Livingston counties, yes: the clerk's office takes the prints. In Eaton, Clinton, Ionia and Barry, prints are a second stop at the sheriff.
