What a Michigan CPL costs, all in
With Back 2 Basics, plan on about $235: the $120 one-day course, the state's $100 application fee and the $15 fingerprint fee. Renewing every four to five years costs $115.
The fees, one by one
Training course: set by whoever teaches it. Ours is $120 for the full 8 hours, paid at the door by cash or Venmo.
Application and licensing fee: $100, set by state law, paid to your county clerk, and not refundable.
Fingerprints: $15, set by state law. Some counties print you at the clerk's counter and some send you to the sheriff, so where you pay depends on where you live.
Renewal: $115, whether you renew online, by mail or at the clerk.
The costs people forget
Ammunition: the course has to include at least 30 rounds on a firing range. Ask what is included. For our class, bring your pistol and ammunition if you have them, and get in touch beforehand if you don't.
Card fees at the clerk: some counties add a surcharge for debit or credit cards. Ingham County adds a minimum of $2, so cash or a check saves a little.
Questions
Is the $100 application fee refundable?
No. State law makes it nonrefundable, so read the eligibility conditions on the application before you file.
How much is a CPL renewal in Michigan?
$115, at the county or through the State Police online and mail system. If your license has been expired more than a year, you apply as new instead: the course, $100 and fingerprints.
